The implementation of IPTC data (keywords, star ratings, color codes) in NX2 appears to me to be almost pointless. And isn't that the whole point here? Just because I can cook a meal over a cigarette lighter, I have chosen not to.
So a true sidecar file (same file with a different extension) is NOT supported by NX2. It is a 'preset' file that you can use to embed the data in another NEF. In fact, it is not a sidecar file at all. IT IS NOT transparent or practical to do this for a large collection of images. NX2 can create a XMP/IPTC preset file, but not without the user doing it "by hand" for each NEF. 'Sidecar' files for IPTC/XMP data are the standard used by PS and most DAM products. Despite this, some will allow you to do it.

Other software manufacturers are reluctant to use (update or write) the embedded data because it is 'proprietary'. and I always research and do not go on "feelings".ĭespite the hostility and adamant attitude of Tomtom, i have learned a lot from this exchange.Ĭapture NX2 embeds keywords and other XMP data in a non-documented way in a NEF.
Not trying to get into a back and forth on this. but unless it will respect XMP edits by other DAM products (not directly within the NEF itself), it will not work for me. NX2 certainly has come a long way and I'd love to see if it could fit into my workflow. NX2 will not allow you to use a 3rd party program that does not embed XMP data into the NEF images as my test shows. "John-In your case specifically, if you turn on "write XMP sidecar files" then pretty much all software (except apparently for Capture NX2) will see the XMP data (white fields) when written by DP4.3." If you use a program that can embed XMP/IPTC metadata into NEFs, like View NX or Photo Mechanic, then Capture NX2 will "see" the star ratings, allowing you to then filter images by label or star rating in the Capture NX 2.0 browser." However, Bridge and other programs can read stars and labels embedded into NEFs by Capture NX 2.0. (specifically where the author notes: "Because Capture NX2 won't read sidecar XMP data, be aware that if you use Adobe Bridge to place stars on your images, unless you use another utility to embed the XMP data into the NEF itself, Capture NX2 won't read the stars. I also found these sites that discuss the lack of sidecar files in NX2. I checked the settings in NX2 to see if there was something I missed about sidecar files but didn't find anything.

I go back to NX2 and the changes do not appear.ġ2) I shut down NX2 and opening it again and point to the photo and it still shows Photographer.ġ3) I change Photographer to Gardener in NX2 and fileġ4) The sidecar file does NOT change and in Pro2 nothing indicates a change is needed.ġ5) Doing a batch set does not update (which makes sense since the XMP sidecar did not change). and it now shows: painter as expected.ġ1) meanwhile.

Opening the file in textpad reveals the XMP info as expected: photographerĩ) I modify this in Pro 2 to read: Painter and batch set the infoġ0) Review the XMP sidecar file again. XMP sidecar file has just been created in the folder (by Pro2). I see the Creator Job Title of Photographer in my IPTC tab as expected.Ĩ) I note that a. just IMG_13089.NEF.ħ) I pull the image into Pro 2 and do a batch set. nothing exists.Ĥ) I add a Creator Job Title: PhotographerĦ) I look in the folder where this image is stored. Never been touched by any software before.ģ) I click the metadata tab. a test with NX2 and Pro 2 (also tried with IMatch, IDimager and Portfolio):
